“Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace.” ~Oscar Wilde, The Canterville Ghost
Death is an inseparable part of life. Yet death is a taboo subject in our culture: Just the idea of it is enough to make most of us feel uncomfortable, and so we try our best to avoid contemplating our transient existence.
As all the great spiritual teachers have pointed out, our deepest and basic fear in life is the fear of death. Our attachment to our impermanent life is what keeps us trapped in suffering, and unless we accept and embrace the reality of death, we won’t be able to live happily and care-free.
Without further ado, here’s an immensely beautiful short animation that reminds us of the importance of befriending death. Enjoy.
