Although color, location, language, nationality, and religion–among other things–might separate people, there is one thing they have in common that unites them all: the heart–that is, the capacity to feel and share love.
No matter our differences, no matter our conflicting desires, we all deep down need love, both to receive and give. We all need to share and partake in something bigger than ourselves. We all long to expand our sense of self and find fulfillment in the embrace of a bigger whole.
In our entire lives we are all trying to fulfill that need, in one way or another. Most of us, however, fail to perceive this underlying connectedness between people, so much so that, being focused on our differences, we tend to think that others can fulfill their needs only at the expense of ourselves. Hence instead of helping each other, we choose to put obstacles to each other. As a result, almost no one of us manages to fulfill his or her need, and thus we end up experiencing a state of deep suffering.
If our basic psychological need is the same, then our differences can only be superficial. It is therefore time to stop fighting against each other and instead work together so as to help each other. It is time to stop putting obstacles in the way of others and instead help others create bridges to their desired destinations.
