The future was so bright J. Robert Oppenheimer had to wear shades. On July 16, 1945, the Manhattan Project director clipped on a pair of sunglasses and looked out over the New Mexico desert, awaiting the world’s first atomic test. As the mushroom cloud boiled up over the horizon, a line from The Bhagavad-Gita popped into the lanky scientist’s head: “I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”
